Typically, ottoman beds are twin-sized beds with a mattress only. The mattress is generally made of polyfoam. They are used in homes where an extra bed is occasionally needed, as well as in studio apartments, dorm rooms and even on camping trips. You can even use them as a convenient extra seat or bed in an RV or tent. They provide not only a place to sleep, but also can double as a table, footrest or extra seating.

These products have the distinct advantage of being portable. They can easily be taken on a camping trip and can even provide extra sleeping space in hotels when traveling. There are only two disadvantages to using this piece of furniture. Ottoman beds generally come in twin sizes and can only support up to 250 pounds. There are a few stores that may offer larger sleep area in oversized sleep ottomans, but of course, these are much more expensive.
Shopping Hints
When shopping for this type of bedroom storage furniture, determine how much you can spend before making a final selection. Leather ottoman beds cost more than cloth-style ottomans. However, the leather styles have the most storage space for not only the bed mechanism, but also additional compartments for other items.
Be sure to measure the room or other area in which you wish to place the ottoman. Then check to see if the product will easily fit in that space when it is both folded or opened for sleeping.
When choosing a cloth or microfiber ottoman bed, be sure to read the care and cleaning instructions. Also, decide how the furniture will be used.
